TORONTO — The Toronto Stock Exchange opened lower as the price for oil and gold both lost ground.
The S&P/TSX composite index lost 16.49 points at 13,417.
In New York, markets were mixed amid news that Pfizer and Allergan will join in a US$160 billion deal to create the world’s largest drugmaker.
The Dow Jones industrials edged down 0.30 of a point to 17,823.51, while the broader S&P 500 index crept up 0.46 of a point to 2,089.63.
The Nasdaq composite added 0.67 of a point at 5,105.59.
On the commodity markets, the December gold contract lost US$6.10 at US$1,070.20, while the January crude oil contract fell 59 cents to US$41.31.
The January contract for natural gas gained 1.8 cents at US$2.309.
The Canadian dollar lost 0.04 of a cent at 74.89 cents U.S.
